Chisinau municipal council approves 2012 budget

CMCOn February 20th the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC) approved the 2012 municipal budget in the first reading with the votes of 27 councilors today. The faction of the Party of Communists (PCRM) abstained from vote.

Under the draft budget for 2012, the revenues stand at 2.397.480 billion lei. The spending is estimated at 2.610.450 billion lei, and the deficit is of 212.97 million lei. The deficit will be covered from the sale and privatization of public assets and loans given by international financial organizations.

At a CMC extraordinary meeting, the head of the finance department at the Chisinau city hall, Veronica Herta, said that most revenues will represent direct and integral collections and the income tax.

More than a half of expenses provided for in the 2012 budget will be meant for social spending, followed by economic expenditures and the ones for capital investments. Most money of the 2012 municipal budget will be earmarked for the education sector, public order maintenance and health care.

The PCRM councilors criticized the draft municipal budget for 2012, describing it as "anti-social." The Communists showed discontent with the fact that the budget was approved with delay, although the CMC normally should have been considered it in late 2011.

Chisinau general mayor Dorin Chirtoaca said the 2012 municipal budget will be approved in the second reading in several weeks.
